2. Proclamation of “Lead Poisoning Prevention Week” in Los Angeles\nCounty: Ensuring Residents Are Lead-Aware\nRecommendation as submitted by Supervisors Solis and Hahn: Proclaim\nOctober 20 through 26, 2024 as “Lead Poisoning Prevention Week” throughout\nLos Angeles County; instruct the Director of Public Health to launch a formal\nhealth education campaign during Lead Poisoning Prevention Week that is\nculturally and linguistically accessible with a goal to encourage parents to have\nchildren screened for lead by a medical provider at ages one and two, or\nwhenever there is a potential exposure to lead from lead-based paint, consumer\nproducts, or other sources, and encourage community members to participate\nin Lead Poisoning Prevention Week events hosted by the Department of Public\nHealth’s (DPH’s) Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program, with event\ndetails to be found on DPH’s social media platforms: @lapublichealth on\nInstagram, X (formerly known as Twitter), and DPH’s Facebook page; and\ninstruct the Director to take the following actions:\nCollaborate with the Chief Executive Officer, through its Countywide\nCommunications Office, to promote Lead Poisoning Prevention Week\nacross social media platforms and invite County employees to Lead\nPoisoning Prevention Week events;\nDevelop health education materials and presentations that are\nlinguistically accessible in the County’s top five languages, with\nreadiness to interpret into more languages as needed, and address\nshort- and long-term symptoms and effects of lead on individuals across\nthe age spectrum, special considerations for older adults and individuals\nwith disabilities, lead poisoning prevention, actions post-lead exposure,\nsuch as nutrition, and information on identifying signs of lead exposure\nillness in pets and next steps, and intentionally engage residents in\noutreach and engagement activities;\nCollaborate with the following school districts, but not limited to, the Los\nAngeles Unified School District, Hacienda La Puente Unified School\nDistrict, Baldwin Park School District, El Monte City School District, and\nPomona Unified School District, to provide health education information\nregarding lead exposure and actions post-exposure for TK-12\nschool-aged children, additionally collaborate with the Superintendent of\nSchools of the Los Angeles County Office of Education, and applicable\nparent and student groups, to promote Lead Poisoning Prevention Week\nand provide ongoing health education regarding impact of lead on health\nand post exposure care;\nCollaborate with the Director of Health Services to make health education\nmaterials visibly available at relevant County facilities, including hospitals\nand clinics;\nEngage County employed and contracted medical providers with\neducational material and the need to screen young children;\nTrack the number of individuals actively engaged regarding lead, and\nreport back to the Board at both six months and 12 months, noting how\nthey were reached, whether it was a school setting and by Supervisorial\nDistrict; and\nCollaborate with County Counsel to report back to the Board in writing in\n90 days on the feasibility of including a requirement in Memoranda of\nUnderstanding and contracts with external medical providers that\nindicates they must customarily screen young children and provide\neducation about lead exposure to their patients.
