16. Supporting Diversity in the Los Angeles County Legal Community\nRecommendation as submitted by Supervisor Mitchell: Instruct County Counsel,\nthe Public Defender, the Alternate Public Defender, the Director of Child\nSupport Services, and request the District Attorney, in collaboration with the\nExecutive Director of Racial Equity, to report back to the Board in writing within\n180 days on the following:\nCurrent efforts to advance the implementation of the Anti-Racism,\nDiversity and Inclusion Initiative within each Department;\nCurrent recruitment activities and recommendations on how to advance\ndiversity, inclusion, and belonging within all aspects of each\nDepartment’s recruitment, hiring, onboarding, promotion, and retention\nprocesses ensuring fair and equitable access to employment\nopportunities for all qualified individuals; and\nRecommendations to improve efforts to create a more robust pipeline of\ndiverse attorneys by reaching students at all levels, from grade school to\nlaw school, including Los Angeles County law schools and diverse law\nschools nationwide; and\nInstruct County Counsel to report back to the Board in writing within 180 days\non efforts to create a more equitable process and policy for hiring outside\ncounsel and increasing contracting opportunities for small, more diverse firms,\nincluding meaningful consideration of firms’ commitments to the following:\nCreating culture where diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging efforts\nare of the highest priority;\nCreating a diverse pipeline of attorneys;\nPro bono representation that advances equity and universal access to\njustice in the County, such as, but not limited to, full or partial scope civil\nlegal representation to low-income County residents, full scope legal\nrepresentation for indigent defendants facing criminal charges, and other\nsupport to service providers whose services support County initiatives;\nand\nAdherence to the County’s anti-racism principles.
