11. Improving Access to Gun Violence Restraining Orders\nRecommendation as submitted by Supervisors Hahn and Solis: Instruct the\nDirector of Public Health, through the Office of Violence Prevention, in\ncollaboration with the Chief Executive Officer, County Counsel, District\nAttorney, the Executive Officer/Clerk of the Superior Court, Sheriff, Acting\nChief Information Officer, and all other relevant Departments, to report back to\nthe Board in writing in 90 days with the following:\nA plan to implement a culturally and linguistically relevant public\nawareness campaign about Gun Violence Restraining Orders (GVROs)\nthat will, at a minimum, inform and educate the public on California’s\nlandmark GVRO law that took effect in 2016, including what GVROs are,\nhow to apply for one, who can apply for one, the application process,\nand how to access resources that can provide assistance;\nOptions to establish a process to collect data on GVROs that are\nsubmitted in Los Angeles County including, but not limited to, the number\nof GVROs filed annually, the number of emergency GVROs, the number\nof petitions that result in an order after a court hearing, the number of\nfirearms removed as a result of the GVRO, the relationship of petitioners\nto the subject, and zip code and demographic data for petitioners and\nsubjects; and\nOptions and recommendations for assigning responsibility within the\nCounty for streamlining the GVRO process, collecting data, providing\ntraining to law enforcement and the public, and assisting with both\npublic-initiated and law enforcement-initiated GVRO petitions, and these\noptions should consider models implemented in other cities and counties\n(like San Diego’s GVRO unit), look into best practices around California,\nand include what resources would be required for implementation.\n(23-0986)\nAttachments: Motion by Supervisors Hahn and Solis\nPublic Comment/Correspondence
