Agenda Item 8
8. APPROPRIATION FROM THE EQUIPMENT FUND RESERVE FOR THE PURCHASE
OF ONE POLICE PATROL MOTORCYCLE FOR THE ALHAMBRA POLICE
DEPARTMENT – F2M26-17, M2M26-121
On March 20, 2026, Patrol Motorcycle Unit 538 was struck by another vehicle while
conducting a traffic stop, resulting in extensive damage. Following inspection, the City’s
insurance adjuster determined the motorcycle was a total loss. The California Joint
Powers Insurance Authority (JPIA) issued an insurance settlement to the City in the
amount of $33,246.44 due to current market conditions and the increased costs for a
replacement patrol motorcycle, the insurance settlement is insufficient to cover the full
replacement cost. The estimated purchase price of a replacement motorcycle is
$46,555.09, resulting in a funding shortfall of $13,308.65. Staff is requesting an
appropriation in the amount of $13,308.65 from the Equipment Fund Reserves to fully fund
the replacement purchase.
Recommended Action: City Council approve an appropriation of $13,308.65 from
the Equipment Fund Reserve for the purchase of one police patrol motorcycle; direct the
Finance Director to transfer insurance settlement revenues in the amount of $32,246.44
to complete the purchase; and, direct staff to undertake the steps necessary to finalize the
Council’s action. (M2M26-121)
