5. Proclaiming March as “Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month” in Los Angeles\nCounty and Bringing Resources to Families Who Have Loved Ones with\nDisabilities\nRecommendation as submitted by Supervisor Mitchell: Proclaim March as\n“Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month,” and ask County employees to wear a green\nribbon on March 6, 2024, in honor of individuals living with cerebral palsy and\nto acknowledge family members and activists that come together each March to\nadvocate for the cerebral palsy community; instruct the Director of Aging and\nDisabilities to work with the Director of Health Services, and report back to the\nBoard in writing within 120 days on the following:\nResources currently available in the County for people with cerebral\npalsy and similar muscular disabilities and the different age groups for\nwhich these resources are available;\nThe data currently available regarding the rates of incidence of cerebral\npalsy and similar disabilities among County residents, outside of the\nCalifornia’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (State-level\ndata), including demographic data regarding race, ethnicity, age, and\ndisease rates by service planning area; and\nThe data needed to conduct a needs assessment in the County to better\nunderstand how many children and adults suffer from cerebral palsy and\nother similar disabilities and the need for services; and\nInstruct the Director of Aging and Disabilities to work in collaboration with the\nDirector of Health Services, and relevant Department Heads, to identify\nopportunities for outreach and awareness of cerebral palsy and similar\ndisabilities by evaluating existing resources already available through the\nCalifornia Children’s Services program, operated by the Department of Public\nHealth, and to leverage existing relationships with external stakeholders working\ntoward similar goals, creating a resource guide for residents in need of service,\nand host a biannual online meeting with community partners to facilitate sharing\ninformation and best practices in serving people diagnosed with cerebral palsy.\n(24-0844)
