F.3. ASSESSMENT OF PEDESTRIAN LIGHTING IN WEST HOLLYWOOD [D.\nHANG, C. BYERS, Y. QUARKER, A. LOVANO, J. DEL TORO]:\nSUBJECT: The City Council will consider directing staff to hire a consultant to\nperform an assessment of pedestrian lighting with an emphasis on residential\nneighborhoods in West Hollywood. This is a public safety item; whereas,\npedestrian safety, crime reduction, safer walking conditions with bright\nilluminated sidewalks, all add to an overall increase in public safety. Nighttime\nsafety is critical to live, work, and play in West Hollywood. The assessment will\ninclude conducting a survey of current lighting, while correlating specific areas of\nlighting to existing public safety Part 1 and Part 2 crime data and providing\nrecommendations to the City on potential interventions to increase visibility and\nenhance public safety. The City Council will also consider providing direction to\nstaff to research options to retrofit and modernize the blue globe pedestrian\nlights along Santa Monica Boulevard.\n\nRECOMMENDATIONS: 1) Direct staff to hire a consultant to perform an\nassessment of current pedestrian lighting with an emphasis on residential\nneighborhoods in West Hollywood; and correlate areas of lighting with Public\nSafety Part 1 and Part 2 crime data to identify locations to target interventions as\nneeded; 2) Direct staff to hire a lighting designer or a lighting design firm to\ndesign and/or purchase new fixtures, bulbs, transformers, etc. to retrofit and\nmodernize the existing notable blue globe pedestrian lighting infrastructure\nalong Santa Monica Boulevard; and 3) Return to City Council with\nrecommendations for improvements to pedestrian lighting with the goal of\nincreasing visibility and enhancing public safety.
