35. 26-54699\nRecommendation to request City Manager to work with all appropriate\ndepartments including Parks, Recreation and Marine, Community Development,\nand the Office of Equity, as well as engage with the Parks and Recreation\nCommission and community stakeholders, to initiate a comprehensive review and\nrenaming process for City-owned parks, facilities, and assets currently honoring\nCesar E. Chavez, including Cesar E. Chavez Park in downtown Long Beach;\nRequest City Manager to work with the Office of Equity and community\nstakeholders to propose revisions to the City’s existing resolution recognizing the\n31st of March as Cesar Chavez Day, into a new and more expansive resolution\npromoting a day of celebration in the City that uplifts the broader legacy of\neconomic justice and civil rights of the farmworkers movement, and that\nrecognizes the invaluable role that women leaders have and continue to play in\nthese movements for dignity and justice; request City Attorney to revise this\nresolution based on community feedback; and\nRequest City Manager to engage and encourage the Long Beach Unified School\nDistrict, Long Beach City College, California State University Long Beach and\nother prominent civic and cultural institutions throughout Long Beach to pursue\nsimilar measures to review and consider potential renaming actions for schools,\ncenters, facilities, programs, celebrations, days of recognition, and other public\nforums currently honoring Cesar E. Chavez into names that are more consistent\nwith the city’s broader values of equity, inclusion, and justice.\nOffice or Department:\nRex Richardson, Mayor; Roberto Uranga, Vice Mayor,\nSeventh District; Mary Zendejas, Councilwoman, First\nDistrict; Joni Ricks-Oddie Councilmember, Ninth District\nSuggested Action:\nApprove recommendation.
