33. RESOLUTION TO APPLY TO CAL FIRE’S URBAN AND COMMUNITY GRANT\nPROGRAM – F2M24-18, R2M24-21\nStaff requests that the City Council adopt a resolution to apply to Cal Fire’s Urban and\nCommunity Grant Program. This grant will fund crucial steps to advance the City’s\nmanagement and improvement of its trees. As a part of this grant the City would complete\nan updated inventory, a tree canopy assessment, the development of an Urban Forest\nManagement Plan (UFMP), and tree planting. The UFMP will be the City’s guiding document\nto ensure that the benefits of a healthy urban forest are available to the community. A main\ngoal of the UFMP will be to increase citywide canopy cover in order to maximize urban\ncooling, stormwater mitigation, air pollution mitigation, and improve walkability. After the\nUFMP is complete, the grant will fund a community tree planting campaign. This project will\nbe applied for and completed in partnership with TreePeople. The objective of this grant\nmeets the goal of the 2024 Strategic Plan to promote sustainability.\nRecommended Action: City Council adopt Resolution No. R2M24-21 entitled:\nResolution of the City Council of Alhambra, California for funding from the Urban and\nCommunity Forestry Grant Program of the California Department of Forestry and Fire\nProtection to apply for a CAL FIRE Urban and Community Forest Grant to develop a\ncomprehensive Urban Forest Management Plan to increase tree benefits and promote\ncommunity engagement; and, direct staff to undertake the steps necessary to finalize the\nCouncil’s action.
