A. REQUEST FROM THE FAMILY OF LATE CHIEF ERNIE SALAS TO PLACE A\nPLAQUE IN HIS HONOR IN PLAZA PARK\nIn April 2021, the Native Sons of the Golden West gifted a plaque in honor of\nthe late Chief Ernie Perez Teutimez to his family. His son, Andy Salas, has been\nin communication with City staff and would like to donate his plaque to the City\nto be installed. This request was initially reviewed by the Historic Preservation\nand Cultural Resources Commission (HPCRC), which approved the placement.\nSince that time, additional information has been presented. The cost of\ninstallation is negligible and will be absorbed by the Public Works Department.\nCalifornia Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Determination: Not a Project as\ndefined in Section 15378 of the State CEQA Guidelines.\nRecommended Action:\nStaff recommends that the City Council review and discuss the following\noptions:\nOption 1: Direct staff to place the plaque in the proposed location in Plaza Park.\nOption 2: As mentioned during the discussion about the west end of Smith\nPark, direct staff to propose a monument to be placed in Smith Park\ndenoting the area as open/passive park space to pay tribute to all of\nthe ancestors of the Gabrieleño tribe.\nOption 3: Take no action at this time.
