15. Heat Education and Alerts for TK-12 Schools, Early Care and Education\nSettings and Summer Camps\nRecommendation as submitted by Supervisor Solis: Instruct the Director of\nPublic Health to collaborate with the Superintendent of Schools of the Los\nAngeles County Office of Education, the Chief Sustainability Officer, the\nDirector of Parks and Recreation, and the Director of the Office of Emergency\nManagement, Chief Executive Office, to take the following actions:\nEstablish and implement a heat alert system to communicate heat alerts\nahead of high heat days to TK-12 schools, early care and education\nsettings and seasonal summer camps, with general recommendations of\nactions to take, and release the alerts with the previously prepared school\nheat toolkit to TK-12 schools and summer camps;\nDevelop a health education presentation regarding extreme heat that is\navailable in multiple languages for TK-12 school personnel and parents\nthat will provide information on early symptoms of heat illness and types\nof heatstroke, first aid actions to address heat illness symptoms, impact\nof heat on children in TK-12 schools, including school aged children with\nunderlying health conditions, and should include information about the\nheat alert system;\nDevelop a health education presentation that is available in multiple\nlanguages and is specific to early care and education (ECE) settings\nregarding heat to disseminate to caregivers, parents, and educators of\ninfants and young children on the risks and steps to take to protect them\nfrom extreme heat;\nOutreach to TK-12 schools and parks hosting seasonal summer camps to\nengage regarding the school heat toolkit and implementation of heat\nalerts, outreach regarding the heat presentation for both TK-12 and ECE\nsettings, existing resources to assist schools, and the available guidance\nto support schools with their own heat action plan development; and\nReport back to the Board in writing in 180 days on the results of the\nabove directives including, but not be limited to, metrics showing how\nmany school administrators, educators, parents, and caregivers were\nengaged around extreme heat and steps to take to protect children,\nmetrics on presentation attendees, the number of times heat alerts are\nsent to schools, and the reach of health education tools; and\nInstruct the Director of Public Health to collaborate with the Superintendent of\nSchools of the Los Angeles County Office of Education, the Chief Sustainability\nOfficer, and Director of the Office of Emergency Management, Chief Executive\nOffice, to identify and report back to the Board in writing in 180 days on the\nfeasibility of developing a best practices fact sheet applicable to infants and\nyoung children, and establishing a contact list of private childcare and\npreschool facilities in the County that can be reached with a heat alert.\n(24-2950)
